Writing my dissertation at the moment, just starting work on my new Unreal mod which will be custom everything! Just thought I'd drop by and tell you if you want to get a lot of good practice in with ZBrush, pick a monthly focus area and do a 3D sketch per day. Be it facial anatomy or the body, just pick something and go with it!
I'd suggest either building your own base mesh in another package (Max, Maya, Lightwave), or finding a free one only. Having good established topology in the mesh will help with the sculpting so you're not fighting against the polygons when adding detail.
